Sight Words

In general, many languages have different types of letters, and the number of sounds that these letters make varies. Thus, each letter makes a unique sound. However, this is not the case in English, there are 26 letters in English, but there are no 26 sounds. There are more than 40 sounds in English. While there are so many sound combinations, words and sentences have been taught as a whole for many years without any phonetic knowledge. This is still a used method and is also referred to in the literature by names such as the Whole Language / Look and Say / Dolch Words / Sight Reading.

On the one hand, while teaching singular sounds to the students, on the other hand, teaching words that are not divided into syllables (sight words) is a very efficient learning method. Sight words are the system where words are taught, not sounds. Sight Words are words that are difficult to spell and are therefore recommended to be learned as a whole.

Sight words are “words that need to be noticed instantly and must be able to do it without making a sound. Knowing the words by seeing them, learning them make them faster, fluent and proper readers. In addition to reading, many sight words are difficult to read and hack, they are not written as they are heard. Children learn words by seeing and recognizing sounds. These words are the words that schools expect instant information from children. Once we have mastered the words of sight, we no longer have to confuse and think about spelling rules. Because after the readers learn them, they automatically recognize the words. Creating a wide vocabulary gives children faster, smoother, and fluent readers.
