According to the constructivist approach in social sciences, it could be even the root of all the societies’ structures. How can we, the people of business life, enjoy the power of this ancient but effective tool of whole humankind?  The answer is simple, by following the sacred rules of it. Following the grammar rules makes our messages, clear and understandable. One of the most misused grammar rules is the usage of collective nouns. In English, all the words have unique collective nouns for them. For example, sheep. You will be able to find examples of the collective noun for sheep.

Herd of sheep

One of the collective noun choices you can make is the word “herd”. It could be used as a collective noun for sheep. The person who leads and directs is called a shepherd. Shepherd look after the herd. Even if you can use the “herd” with an adjective, the word can be used alone, and it still describes a group of sheep.

  1. There are lots of sheep here. Sheepdogs that protect the herd could be anywhere, be careful!
  2. It looks like clouds are on the grasses. Or I can clearly say that there is a herd of sheep there. They seem so fluffy.
  3. Our great lord, our shepherd had sacrificed his own life for its herd of sheep. The herd should be following his lead even if he’s dead.

 



Flock of sheep

The fluffy and cute creatures are in people’s lives from the start of human civilization. So, there are several group names that could be used as a collective noun for sheep. The word, “flock” is one of them. When people see a group of sheep together, “flock” is useful there, too.

  1. The little girl said, look, mommy, there are little cloudies there. No honey said the mother, they are a flock of sheep. They are alive like us.
  2. People are migrating towards other countries like a flock of sheep. The crucial difference is there is no shepherd to look after them. They are all alone with the dangers.
  3. The wolves were looking for an opportunity to take one of the sheep but the sheepdogs were awake. They were insurance for a flock of sheep.

 

Drove of sheep

You see sheep generally like a body like fans in a stadium. When you see a group of sheep stands like football fans in a stadium, you have the ability to use the word “drove” to describe them. In other words, drove is a collective noun for sheep. By the way, this word is used when describing a large mass of people moving or acting as a body.

  1. A drove of sheep had changed the color of the grass. Look, the grass is white now.
  2. It seems like sheep have the ability to swim. A drove of sheep crossing the river by swimming.



Mob of sheep

Sometimes we use unique words to describe a specific group of sheep. The word “mob” is one of them. When you see a group of sheep from the same breed that grown up under the same climate conditions from the previous shearing. That’s a mob of sheep.

  1. A mob of sheep is hanging out on the steppes. They are waiting for their barber.
  2. Patrick’s Day in the USA is interesting. People in green are walking towards anywhere like a mob of sheep.
  3. This mob of sheep seems like they were cold. Let’s take them inside.

Fall of sheep

Probably you know that catchphrase. “Will you jump down from the hill, if the rest of them jump?” You can be familiar with a collective noun for sheep. It is fall. People can use the word “fall” to describe a group of sheep. What happens if a group of sheep jumps down from the hill? They fall.

  1. There were kindergarten kids in the backyard. They look like a fall of sheep, obviously, their shepherd is the teacher, Mrs. Aldrin.
  2. It seems like you misunderstood the greatest game of the universe. Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne is not about a fall of sheep it is about the fall of literally a lost police officer.
