THE MODALS ‘WOULD’

Would is used as the past tense of will and going to. Would is used as an auxiliary verb in English. We would use it to refer to the repetitive actions we used to do. It is also used with the words would, would like, would love, would prefer and would rather.

In the reported speech sentences, would also mean the past tense of future modes.

Would is also used in conditional statements.

We would use it to express our wishes and tendencies.
