How tou use Despite, Using Despite in English, Example Sentences with Despite
Using Despite
In this lesson, we will examine “despite” usage and examples. In English, ‘despite’ connects the name and the sentence and gives opposite meaning. ‘Despite’ is not used when connecting two sentences. Some verbs are named after “-ing” and can be used as such. ‘Despite’ can be connected to two sentences by adding “the fact that” at the end. The Despite grammatical structure is as follows:
Use at the beginning of the sentence
- (Despite) + (Noun) + (,) + (Sentence)
For example:
- Despite the difficulties, they helped us. > We helped them despite the difficulties.
Use in the sentence
- (Sentence) + (Despite) + (Noun)
For example:
- They helped us despite the difficulties.
Note: If ‘Despite’ is used at the beginning of the sentence, the name and the clause are separated from each other by a comma. ‘Despite’ is always brought before the name.
Despite the fact that use
Despite the fact that connects the sentence with the sentence, not the sentence with the name. So it is used as ‘although‘. Its use and added meaning is the same. In other words, it adds opposite meaning to the sentence it comes before.
Use at the beginning of the sentence
- (Despite the fact that) + (Sentence) + (,) + (Sentence).
For example:
- Despite the fact that Jesica helps to the poor, she isn’t rich
Use in the sentence
- (Sentence) + (Despite the fact that) + (Sentence)
For example:
- Jesica helps to the poor despite the fact that she isn’t rich
